Round 7 of the Yamaha Quad X series was held in Surprise, AZ at Speedworld MX Park. Friday night’s practice session might have been lit up better by the lightning all around us than the lights that surround the track, but with only a few minutes of rain there was still plenty of dust at the start of Saturday’s program. As usual for the high speed, slippery track; starts would be very important. There was a little extra riding on this race as a win or finish ahead of Beau Baron would clinch the 2011 Quad X Championship for me.
Moto 1: I had a slightly slow jump off the gate, but as the pack bunched up on the inside of turn one my #94 YFZ-R pulled me around the outside to take the holeshot. Beau Baron and Josh Row slotted into 2nd and 3rd as we exited turn two. Baron kept the pressure on for the first half of our 20 minute plus 1 lap moto as I made a few small mistakes out front. In the second half Baron over jumped a table top and the hard landing gave him a vibration as he bent his axle. Davi Haagsma also caught and passed Row for 3rd. I was able to extend my lead to 7 seconds by the finish over Baron, Haagsma, Row and Ethan Thatcher.
Moto 2: I gated great in the second moto and there was never a doubt that my #94 YFZ-R was going to pull me the holeshot and the $250 GYTR/Yamalube Holeshot Award. Baron was 2nd and Haagsma 3rd as we headed into turn two. I may have put my best moto of the year together. Out front I rode my fastest lap times of the night with no mistakes for the entire moto. My YFZ-R was so hooked up on the slippery track it felt like I could do no wrong as I steadily pulled away from Baron and the rest of the pack. When the checkers flew I won with an 8 second lead over Baron, Haagsma, Row and Thatcher.
Round 7 of the Yamaha Quad X series was a great night for us. To holeshot and win both motos is always sweet but to clinch the championship with one race to go was awesome. Special thanks to my dad/mechanic, John Nelson, and Bill Johnson, for all their hard work and effort making sure everything is handled at the races. Looking forward to Glen Helen for the final round and awards on October 29th.
